OPA Golf  Championship 2024

One of the exciting preludes to the 98th OPA Reunion Dinner and celebrating 125th Anniversary of St. Paul’s Institution is the OPA Annual Golf Championship 2024. The event was held on the 30th August 2024 at Staffield Country Resort, Mantin, a venue blessed with natural beauty and landscape, featuring a 27 holes international championship golf course, offering fairways and greens sprawled over a natural backdrop of hills and glittering ponds. This time around the event was played at the Northern Nine and Southern Nine courses which provided golfers with exhilarating challenges on the course amidst the appealing ambience and aesthetic scenery.

On the day of the event, the weather was bright and sunny with white fluffy clouds that drifted across the clear blue sky, a perfect day for golfing. A total of 112 passionate and enthusiastic golfers comprising Paulians and guests, men and ladies, senior and young, took part in the championship making a total of 28 full flights. The golfers were all attired smartly in attractive OPA Polo tee-shirts during the rounds, proudly displaying our alumni crest and school colors. The atmosphere is aptly described as fun filled, joyful and laughter, exuding a reassuring feel of positive energy, trust and friendship reconnected right from the very beginning from registration of participants and distributing of goodie bags. The goodie bags comes specially, each with an OPA commemorative mug and OPA Polo t-shirt among other items. A group photo with all the participants was taken to capture a unique moment of camaraderie and sportsmanship before the golfers proceeded to their allocated tee-box.

The format of play in this competition is Stroke Play. At the blast of the shot gun for tees-off, many of the likes of Rory Mcllroy, Scottie Scheffler and Nelly Korda, performed their signature swings poised in style, focused and aiming onto the lush fairways. Good golfing etiquettes were observed among the participants and praises never failed to be given when a good shot is executed. Sometimes, mishits and overzealous attempts do happen and it may be hard not to invite some ticklish moments and humour among the team mates. Anyway, miraculous recovery shots do earn some bragging rights though. The atmosphere was brimming alive for all to enjoy a wonderful day of golfing, fun and friendship.

The main prizes of the tournament are awesomely excellent.

  1. Hole in One. Prize: Honda City 1.5L Hybrid Car sponsored by Messrs. Honda Ban Lee Heng Seremban.

  2. Hole in One/ Bull’s Eye. Prize: Lady Americana Mattress worth RM11,900 sponsored by Mr. Stephen Loo of Messrs. Lady Americana (M) Sdn Bhd.

Many golfers were confident to try to bag at least one of the trophies, which in the mind do not appear to be very difficult to achieve. Unfortunately, there were no winners for both the Hole in One Prizes. Nonetheless, due to the generous sponsorships and support, there were still plenty of interesting and nice prizes to go around for winners, novelties and lucky draws.

At the dinner and prize presentation, the emcee Mr. Anthony Tong did a wonderful work with his cool, calm, and lively approach that complemented and blended well for a lovely, happy and wonderful evening.
