OPA Golf 2023

The 97th OPA (Old Paulians’ Association) Annual Golf Tournament made a triumphant return on the 25th August 2023, after a 3 years hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.  This year we witness a remarkable turnout, with 18 flights consisting 72 players, including Paulians and esteemed guests.  A notable participant was Madam Jane Chee, a former teacher at SPI Primary during the late sixties and seventies, who at the age of 82, displayed her unwavering enthusiasm for golf by playing to a handicap of 21.

The tournament took place at the picturesque Staffield Golf Resort in Mantin.  This friendly yet challenging course boasted tough greens and undulating fairways, providing the perfect backdrop for memorable golfing.  The events were marked by exciting highlights, including 2 Bull’s Eye/Hole in One prizes.  These prizes comprised a Lady Americana Queen Size Mattress valued at RM15,900.00, generously sponsored by Mr. Stephen Loo of Messrs. Lady American (M) Sdn Bhd and a 3 Days/2 Nights Free Trip to Vietnam in an Executive Suite of a 5 star hotel with breakfast for 2, worth RM5,000.00, sponsored by our very own OPA President, Mr. Steven Chan.  Additionally, a Grand Lucky Draw Prize offered one free flight for golf at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club (useable on weekends/public holidays) valued at RM2,000.00, sponsored by Mr. Anthony Tong.  Unfortunately, there were no winners for the Bull’s Eye/Hole in One Prizes, whereas the Grand Lucky Draw Prize found its rightful recipient in M. Manimaran.

In the Gross Category, Miss Lim Ai Lian, a scratch golfer, secured victory with a hard-earned score of 74, narrowly defeating defending champion, Gunaseelan Saman, a 2 handicapper, by a single stroke.  Ai Lian’s victory was historic, as she became the first female Paulian to emerge as the Champion.  The Nett Category was won by James Wong, a 22 handicapper, with an impressive nett score of 68.  The Guest Category say Nantha Kumar, also a 22 handicapper, clinch victory with a net score of 68 on countback.

During his speech, the OPA President, Mr. Steven Chan, who also played the role as Tournament Director, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the respective sponsors, for their unwavering support which plays a pivotal role in the tournament’s success.  The OPA Golf Tournament epitomizes the camaraderie of the Paulian spirit, providing an opportunity for all Paulians to enjoy the fellowship and fun both on and off the course.  It’s not just about celebrating winners but also celebrating the Paulian spirit which unites us, exemplifying the motto of “Once a Paulian, Always a Paulian”.  The true essence lies not in the score but in the lively atmosphere of our indomitable Paulian spirit.

Mr. Chan also commended the organizing committee for their dedication and hard work, which was integral to the success of OPA Golf 2023.  Special recognition was given to emcee, Anthony Tong for his vibrant energy and engaging presence during the prize giving ceremony, as well as to Tee Yoon Poh, our photographer who generously covered the entire event.
